Dead Rodent Removal in Asheville, NC

A sour, rotten smell that gets stronger in one room usually means a rat or mouse died nearby. Finding it fast shortens the misery and lets the area be cleaned.

A snap trap, one reason a dead rodent may be found in a crawl space or attic

What causes the smell and where it comes from

Rats and mice die where they nest or travel: inside walls, under floors, in crawl spaces, attics, ductwork and behind appliances. A rodent that ate poison bait often dies out of sight, which is one reason providers prefer traps inside a home. A rat that died under a refrigerator or inside a bathroom wall can make a room hard to use for days.

The smell usually peaks within the first week and then fades as the body dries out, but in a warm, damp spot it can last longer. Flies around a wall outlet, a stain on the ceiling or a spot where the smell is strongest are the clues a technician follows.

What a thorough removal job includes

  • Narrowing down the source by smell, flies, stains and access from the crawl space, basement or attic.
  • Removing the carcass with gloves and protective gear, following CDC steps: spray the rodent and surrounding area with disinfectant, put it in a plastic bag and seal that inside a second bag.
  • Disinfecting the area and removing soiled insulation or debris.
  • A small access cut only when the rodent cannot be reached any other way, placed where it is easy to patch.
  • An odor treatment for the remaining smell.
  • A look at how the rodent got there, and a quote for trapping and sealing if others are around.

Step by step

1. On the call, describe where the smell is strongest and how long it has been there.

2. The technician checks the crawl space, basement or attic under and above that spot first. Many dead rodents are found there without opening a wall.

3. If the source is inside a wall or ceiling, the technician uses smell, flies and sometimes a small inspection hole to pinpoint it.

4. The carcass comes out, the area is disinfected, and any opening is closed or left for patching.

5. If live rodents are still around, traps and sealing are scheduled.

Why dead rodents are hard to find in Asheville homes

Older houses have more hidden spaces. Plaster walls on wood lath, open stud bays, old chimneys and boxed-in pipes give a dying rodent lots of places to crawl into. Houses on slopes often have a crawl space under part of the house and finished rooms over the rest, with no easy access between them.

Many homes also have ductwork running through a crawl space. A mouse that dies inside a duct sends the smell through the floor registers, which makes it seem like the whole house smells.

After Hurricane Helene, some homes and outbuildings near the rivers and creeks had rodents trapped and drowned in crawl spaces, basements and debris. Cleanup in flood-damaged spaces is its own job. See rodents after flooding and Helene cleanup.

What to ask before you book

Ask whether the visit includes searching the crawl space, basement and attic, or only the room. Ask whether the price changes if a wall or ceiling has to be opened, and whether patching is included or left to you. Ask what disinfectant and odor treatment will be used. If the smell comes through the floor or ceiling registers, mention it, because a rodent in ductwork may need an HVAC contractor too.

After the source is removed, ask about the rest of the population. A dead rodent in a wall usually means more traveled the same path, and trapping and sealing are the way to stop the next one.

Dead rodent removal questions

How long will a dead mouse smell last?

Often a week or two, sometimes longer in a warm, damp spot or with a larger rat. Removing the source shortens it.

Can the smell make me sick?

The smell itself is unpleasant. The bigger concern is handling the carcass and droppings without protection. The CDC recommends gloves, disinfectant and double bagging.

What does dead rodent removal cost?

Fixr lists dead rat removal at about $150 to $250. A job that needs a wall opened or a crawl space cleaned costs more. See our cost guide.

Will they need to cut into my wall?

Not usually. Most are found from the crawl space, basement or attic. If a cut is needed, ask for it to be small and in a spot that is easy to patch.

Can I just cover the smell?

Air fresheners mask it for a while. If the rodent is reachable, removing it and disinfecting the spot is faster and cleaner.

Why do I keep finding dead mice after a bait treatment?

Rodents that eat bait can take days to die and often die in hidden places. Ask the provider about switching to traps inside the house, and seal the entry points so new rodents stop coming in.

Can a dead rodent attract other pests?

Flies and beetles find carcasses quickly. Removing it and disinfecting the area ends that.

Ready to have someone look at it?

A local rodent technician can often schedule a visit within a day or two, and same-day appointments are often available. Ask for the plan and the price in writing.
