With farmland in the valleys and forest on the slopes, Fairview homes see both field mice and forest mice. White-footed mice and deer mice nest in barns, workshops, garages and cabins. House mice come into older farmhouses through stone foundations, porches and pipe holes. Norway rats follow feed and water, and they burrow along creeks and ditches that drain the valley.
Hillside homes built in recent decades usually have a basement or garage on the low side and decks off the back. Mice use garage doors and deck ledgers. Homes with long gravel driveways and outbuildings need a plan that covers more than the house.
What works here:
- Seal the house first, since that is where people live.
- Trap and clean outbuildings, with feed and seed in metal bins.
- Clean droppings by the CDC method, especially in closed barns and cabins.
- Check vehicles and equipment stored for the season.
Old barns and farm buildings
Settlers in Fairview drained marshes and channeled creeks to farm the valleys, including tobacco. Old barns, sheds and outbuildings from those farming years still stand on many properties. Their open walls and dirt floors are hard to seal, so the goal is to keep rodents from treating them as a base: store feed and seed in metal bins, keep hay off the ground and trap along walls where droppings show up. Keep the house sealed even if the barn never will be, and check vehicles and equipment parked in old outbuildings for nests.
