Rodent Control in Swannanoa, NC

A river valley community between Asheville and Black Mountain, still rebuilding from Helene, where rats and mice move in wherever buildings sit damaged or empty.

The community and the river

Swannanoa is a census-designated place in eastern Buncombe County between Asheville and Black Mountain, named for the Swannanoa River that runs through it. It is home to the former Beacon Blanket Mill site, Warren Wilson College sits just west, and I-40 runs through the main commercial area. The 2020 census counted 5,021 residents.

Swannanoa was one of the places hit hardest by Hurricane Helene. Mountain Xpress reported riverside apartment complexes flooding, an apartment building on Moffitt Road coming off its foundation, a mobile home park on the east end hit hard and residents near Warren Wilson College losing their homes.

Rodents after the flood

When floodwater fills burrows along a river, Norway rats move to higher ground, and buildings are often the nearest shelter. Damaged homes waiting on repairs, debris piles and stored belongings in sheds and campers give rats and mice cover. Trade press reported more rodent service calls in the Asheville area after the storm, linked to wet ground and flooding.

If you are repairing or moving back into a building here:

  • Ask for an inspection after repairs, since new pipes, wiring and doors often leave gaps.
  • Seal crawl space vents and foundation gaps with metal, not foam.
  • Keep debris and stored lumber off the ground and away from the house.
  • Clean droppings the CDC way: ventilate, wear gloves, soak and wipe. The CDC also notes that leptospirosis risk rises after floods when people touch contaminated water or soil.

Older mill houses and newer homes on wooded lots also get the usual fall mice.

Mill houses and wooded lots

Away from the river, Swannanoa has older homes from its mill days and newer houses on wooded lots up the side valleys. Those get the usual fall mice through crawl space vents, garage doors and utility entries, and deer mice in sheds and garages near the trees.
