Rodent Control in Woodfin, NC

A town on Asheville's north side with mill-village roots, the French Broad River on its western side and new homes climbing the ridges.

The town

Woodfin incorporated in 1971, though the community goes back to at least the mid-1800s. It sits on the north side of Asheville in central Buncombe County, with the French Broad River flowing through its western part. Manufacturing shaped the town, and many early 20th century houses follow mill-village designs, in neighborhoods with names like Martel Village and Company Bottom. Population was 7,936 at the 2020 census, and residential growth since the 1990s has added new subdivisions on the hills.

Rodent issues by type of home

Mill-village houses tend to be small, close together and built on piers or low crawl spaces, with porches and additions added over the decades. Mice and rats move under and between them easily. Crawl space vents, skirting and the gaps around old plumbing are the usual problem spots.

Newer homes on the ridges back up to woods. White-footed mice and deer mice come in through garage doors and utility entries, and roofline gaps get attention from mice climbing trees.

The river corridor is rat country. Norway rats burrow along the French Broad banks and in the low ground near it, and homes and businesses close to the water should keep an eye on their foundations, sheds and trash areas.

A typical Woodfin plan is an inspection, trapping inside, sealing outside, and a check on outbuildings.

Older industrial sites and new neighbors

Manufacturing shaped Woodfin, and the North Carolina Electrical Power Company Electric Generating Plant is on the National Register. Where older buildings sit empty or lots grow over, rats find cover close to homes. Neighbors who see rats coming from a vacant property can raise it with the town or with Buncombe County Environmental Health, which investigates rat nuisance complaints across the county. For your own home, the fix is the usual one: trap inside, seal the outside and keep trash and feed closed up.

Woodfin rodent questions

Do houses near the French Broad get more rats?

Often, since river banks give Norway rats places to burrow. Check foundations and sheds for burrows and keep trash in closed carts.

How do mice get under a house on piers?

If the skirting between piers has gaps or is missing, mice and rats walk right under. Hardware cloth behind the skirting helps.
