A valley in the city that feels like the countryRodent Control in Haw Creek, Asheville
Ridges on three sides, the Blue Ridge Parkway along the top and a creek down the middle. Haw Creek homes live right next to the woods, and so do the mice.
The valley
The Haw Creek Community Association describes the valley as being in the city but feeling like it is in the country. Town Mountain forms the northern edge, the Piney Mountain and Bear Mountain ridge the western edge, and the Blue Ridge Parkway runs along most of the eastern side. The association counts more than 2,500 households, from single-family homes to townhomes, condos and apartments, on narrow roads with vehicle access only from the south.
Haw Creek itself collects water from the ridges and flows south and then west into the Swannanoa River. The community grew around a stagecoach stop and stayed rural until the Beaucatcher Tunnel opened in 1929, according to the city. Haw Creek Park and the wooded Masters Park, which has a trail up to the Parkway, are part of the neighborhood.

With forest on three sides, mice are the most common call. White-footed mice and deer mice come in from the woods into garages, crawl spaces and attics, especially when the weather turns cold. House mice follow the same routes into kitchens.
Homes near the creek and its tributaries see Norway rats along banks, under decks and around sheds. Pastures and gardens add feed and cover.
Apartment and townhome communities in the valley need building-wide plans, since mice move through shared walls and attics.
The fix is the usual pair: trap inside and seal the outside, with careful cleanup where deer mice have nested.
Apartments in the valley
The city notes that a 1977 rezoning allowed large apartment complexes in Haw Creek, and residents organized in the 1990s for sidewalks, greenways and parks. Those complexes sit close to the woods like everything else in the valley. Building-wide inspection, sealing along the foundation and around shared utility runs and clean, closed trash enclosures keep mice from moving unit to unit.

Haw Creek rodent questions
Are the mice in my Haw Creek garage deer mice?
Often. If they have a brown back, white belly and white feet, treat them as deer mice or white-footed mice and follow CDC cleanup steps.
Do homes near the creek get rats?
Creek banks give Norway rats places to burrow. Check along the foundation, under decks and around sheds for holes.
Can I keep mice out of a house that backs to the woods?
You can keep most out by sealing gaps of a quarter inch or larger, fixing garage door seals and keeping firewood and brush away from the house.
