Between Beaucatcher Mountain and the SwannanoaRodent Control in Kenilworth, Asheville
Winding streets, 1920s houses on hillsides and five neighborhood parks between Beaucatcher Mountain and the Swannanoa River.
A 1920s town on the hills
Kenilworth started as its own town in 1913, did most of its growing in the 1920s and became part of Asheville in 1929, according to the city's neighborhood spotlight. Developer Jake Chiles laid out the streets along the path his horse took over the hills, and he dammed Ross Creek in 1925 to make Kenilworth Lake. The housing mix includes 1920s Spanish-style villas, Tudors and Craftsman bungalows, with ranch, modern and multifamily buildings added later. The old Kenilworth Inn is now apartments.
The neighborhood sits southeast of downtown between Beaucatcher Mountain and the Swannanoa River, roughly between Biltmore Avenue and Tunnel Road. Five parks, including Kenilworth Park and Leah Chiles Park, and Gibson Creek running through Meadow and Seven Springs parks, put green space and water close to many homes.

Hillside houses here often have stucco or masonry walls on a partial basement, with a crawl space under the rest. Stucco cracks and stone joints give mice access, and the low side of the house is where Norway rats dig in.
Water draws rats. Homes close to Kenilworth Lake, the creeks and the Swannanoa River see more Norway rat burrows along foundations, sheds and retaining walls. Wooded park edges add white-footed mice in garages and attics.
Apartments in the old inn and in later multifamily buildings need building-wide work. See apartment and rental rodent control.
Studios and home workshops
Kenilworth has an active artist community, with the Kenilworth Artists Association running an annual studio tour. Home studios and workshops in basements, garages and backyard outbuildings store paper, canvas, fabric and packing material, which mice shred for nests. Keep supplies in sealed bins, check outbuildings when the weather turns cold and set a few snap traps along studio walls as early warning. If you rent a studio in someone else's building, report droppings to the owner in writing so the whole building gets checked.

Kenilworth rodent questions
Do homes near Kenilworth Lake get more rats?
Water and soft banks attract Norway rats, so homes near the lake and creeks are worth an outside check for burrows.
How do mice get through stucco?
Through cracks, weep gaps at the base of the wall and openings around pipes and vents. A technician seals them with mesh and patching material.
Is sealing a Spanish-style roof different?
Tile and parapet roofs have their own gaps at edges and scuppers. Ask the technician to check the roofline as well as the foundation.
