About the neighborhood
The City of Asheville calls Grove Park/Sunset Mountain an intact early twentieth century planned suburb and the first plan in the city to break from the street grid. Edwin Wiley Grove, who built the Grove Park Inn, bought the land around it and sold lots to developers and prominent families. Richard Sharp Smith, supervising architect at the Biltmore Estate, shaped the local style, which the city describes as English-derived Craftsman. The neighborhood was laid out as a streetcar suburb with curving streets, parks and larger lots, and Grove Park, Proximity Park and Sunset Terrace are listed on the National Register.

Houses here are often built into the slope of Sunset Mountain, with a basement or garage on the low side and a crawl space under the rest. Stone retaining walls and foundation walls are part of the look, and their joints give mice and rats routes up to the sill. Mature trees overhang many roofs, and mice and flying squirrels use branches to reach eaves and attic vents.
Original details hide gaps too. Exposed rafter tails, wide eaves and deep porches leave small openings where trim meets siding. Older chimneys and later additions do the same. Mice inside these walls are often traveling between the basement and attic.
Rodent work here usually means a careful inspection of the roofline as well as the foundation, sealing that respects historic materials, and pruning branches back from the roof.
Gardens, parks and what draws mice
The neighborhood's three historic parks, E.W. Grove Park, Sunset Parkway and the Griffing Boulevard rose gardens, plus large private gardens, mean plenty of mulch beds, bird feeders and compost. Those are fine as long as seed is stored in metal cans, feeders have trays and compost bins are closed with hardware cloth underneath. Mulch piled against the foundation hides gaps and gives mice cover right at the wall, so keep a strip of bare ground or gravel along the house.

Grove Park rodent questions
Do mice really get in from the trees?
They can. Mice and flying squirrels climb trunks and run along branches to rooflines. Trimming limbs back several feet from the roof helps.
Can a technician seal around exposed rafter tails?
Yes. Mesh, trim-matched blocking and sealant can close gaps without changing the look. Ask how they plan to handle it.
Is the noise in my attic mice or squirrels?
Light scratching at night is often mice or flying squirrels. Heavier daytime noise suggests gray squirrels. An inspection checks droppings and entry holes.
